Remaining Summer Events for 2014

 Summer is slowly fading away but we still have some exciting events to complete your summer!

“Survivors of the Titanic”:  August 16, 2014                  

Jeff Kenney will be giving another one of his informative Power Points on how the Titanic disaster had roots in Culver.  Culver was home to a survivor of the Titanic disaster and a man who lost his entire family.  Come and listen to the interesting tales of how these two men’s lives were intertwined because of this horrible fate.  It is a on Saturday, August 16, 2014. The event will be held at the Culver Public Library at 10:00 a.m.

 

“Unmask Preservation”: September 13, 2014

Join Kurt Garner as he “Unmasks Preservation.” Are you taking advantage of the history of your house? Do you know about exterior and interior easements?   Join us at 4:00 p.m. for Wine and Cheese at the Historic Vonnegut Home located on the East Shore.

 

Annual Ice Cream Social: August 30, 2014

The Society will also be present at the “Gift of Warmth and L’Max Film Fest” at the Town Park serving root beer floats or ice cream and cake.

‘Crimes of Culver’ at AHS annual meeting July 12

A look at the great crimes of Culver’s past is on tap for Saturday, July 12, starting at 10 a.m. as part of the annual meeting of the Antiquarian and Historical Society of Culver.
The event will take place in the large meeting room of the Culver Public Library, 107 N. Main Street in downtown Culver.
Speaker Jeff Kenney will examine some of the more memorable crimes — from bank robberies to murder mysteries, to just plain odd cases — via an audio-visual Power Point presentation, following the business portion of the meeting.

Then-Culver Citizen editor M.R. Robinson holds the special edition of the paper following the 1933 robbery of the State Exchange bank in Culver.

The event is free and open to the public. Those with questions may email historyofculver@gmail.com or call 574-635-0053 (a local number even if not an “842” prefix).

The Museum of Culver & Lake Maxinkuckee History is now open!

After months of planning and effort, the newly renamed museum has opened at 102 W. Jefferson Street, Suite B (south entrance of the First Farmers Bank and Trust Building in downtown Culver)! The museum can be reached by phone at 574-635-0053.

We’re sharing space with the newly-opened Culver and Lake Maxinkuckee Visitor Center, and both entities held their grand openings in June during the Taste of Culver festival. Read more in the Culver Citizen coverage of the event, here.

The museum’s expanded hours are:

Monday: 9 am- 1 pm – Tuesday: Closed  – Wednesday: 10 am- 6 pm  – Thursday: 10 am- 6 pm – Friday: 10 am- 5 pm – Saturday: 9 am – 3 pm – Sunday: Closed .

Stop in and say hello to our Museum Director, Anna Campbell, and check out the new exhibits, including the ever-popular life-size recreated Lake Maxinkuckee steamboat!

Culver and Lake Maxinkuckee Museum of History grand re-opening (more details to come, and available here). (Sat., June 14, 1 p.m. as part of Taste of Culver at Jefferson and Main Streets).
Annual AHS meeting (July 12, 10 a.m. at the Culver Public Library), with Jeff Kenney presenting a look at police work and the major crimes of Culver’s past.

There is so much that is shady in the story of the Huckleberry Queen (August 16, 10 a.m. at the Culver Library large conference room); stories can only be whispered or told in secret. Come and enjoy Anna Liechty, from Plymouth, as she tells the story of the “Confessions of the Huckleberry Queen.”

Preserving your historic home – myths and answers, with preservation architect Kurt Garner, will be the topic at the AHS’ annual wine and cheese gathering in September (exact date and details to be announced).
